From the Islands to the Ring: The Inspiring Journey of Akeem Lewis

Sint Maarten has no shortage of talent, but every now and then someone rises who not only excels in their craft — they lift the whole community with them.

One of those people is Akeem Lewis, Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor, MMA fighter, and a role model for young athletes on the island.

We sat down with him to talk about his journey, his philosophy, and the future of martial arts in Sint Maarten.

Mitchel:

What first inspired you to start martial arts, and how did that journey lead you from Sint Maarten to becoming a Muay Thai and BJJ instructor?

Akeem:

I got introduced to martial arts officially by a class mate in high school, at the age of 16. But for as long as I can remember I was always intrigued by it. There was something about the discipline, the respect, and the raw honesty of fighting that pulled me in. Over time, training became more than a hobby — it became a lifestyle. Traveling and training everywhere I went helped me refine my skills, and eventually I realized that sharing what I learned was just as rewarding as competing.

Mitchel:

Growing up in Sint Maarten, what challenges or experiences shaped you into the athlete and coach you are today?

Akeem
:

Island life is beautiful, but resources for high-level training can be limited. That taught me to be resourceful and self-motivated. It also made me appreciate the importance of community — people here lift each other up. Those values shaped my mindset both inside and outside the gym.

Mitchel:

How do Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu complement each other in your training? Which one has had the biggest impact on your growth?

Akeem
:

Muay Thai gives you striking, explosiveness, and conditioning. BJJ teaches patience, problem-solving, and control. Together they create a complete martial artist. Muay Thai was my first love, so I would say that discipline had the biggest impact on my growth.

Mitchel:

As a coach, what core values or life lessons do you focus on when teaching students at SXM BJJ?

Akeem
:

Discipline, respect, and consistency. I want my students to understand that martial arts is more than fighting — it’s about becoming stronger mentally and emotionally. I try to help them build confidence, resilience, and humility.

Mitchel:

Receiving your black belt is a major milestone. What did that moment represent for you?

Akeem:

It was emotional. A black belt isn’t just about skill — it represents years of sacrifice, setbacks, injuries, and growth. To receive it in the presence of legends I look up to made it even more special.

Mitchel:

You’ve trained and competed internationally. What does it mean to represent Sint Maarten on the world stage?

Akeem:

Sint Maarten is my adopted home, I am originally from Guyana. And It means everything. I always carry the island with me — the people, the culture, the spirit. Every time I step into the ring or onto the mats, I represent my homes and hope to inspire others from SXM and Guyana.

Mitchel:

How do you prepare mentally for fights or intense training? Any routines that keep you focused?

Akeem:

I try to stay calm and present. Visualization helps — I run through scenarios, techniques, and outcomes in my head. I also stick to simple routines: good sleep, good food, and tuning out noise. Mental preparation is just as important as physical training.

Mitchel:

What role do you think martial arts can play in developing youth and community here in SXM?

Akeem:

Martial arts teaches respect, discipline, confidence, and self-control — qualities that can change a young person’s life. I’ve seen students evolve inside the gym in ways that influence their school life, home life, and future goals. It’s a positive outlet that the island needs.

Mitchel:

Where do you see the future of Muay Thai, MMA, and BJJ on the island? What would you like to build in the coming years?

Akeem
:

I see huge potential. Sint Maarten has natural athletes and driven young people. With more facilities, tournaments, and exposure, we can build a strong martial arts culture here. My goal is to help create systems and opportunities that make SXM a regional hub for combat sports.

Mitchel:

Who is your favorite UFC fighter?

Akeem:

I don’t per say have a single favorite fighter I have a few ,Anderson Silva, George st Pierre, Alex poatan.

Mitchel:

Do you have any favorite places to eat in St Maarten?

Akeem:

Alina, pineapple Pete &  the Lo lo’s in Grand Case

Mitchel:

What message would you give to young people in Sint Maarten who want to follow in your footsteps — whether in martial arts or in life?

Akeem:

Stay consistent, stay humble, and believe in your potential. You don’t need perfect conditions — you just need commitment. Your journey might not be easy, but every challenge can be fuel. If you stay focused, you can achieve more than you imagine.
